Where to Stay in Inverness for an Isle of Skye Trip
We used Inverness as our one-night base before driving to Eilean Donan Castle, Sligachan, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing. Here is how to choose the most practical area without paying Skye peak-season prices.

Which Inverness area should you choose?
| Area | Best for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Bus and rail station area | Late arrivals, early coaches and a stay without a taxi | Street noise and the exact walking distance with luggage |
| River Ness and central Inverness | Restaurants, riverside walking and a more relaxed evening | Distance to your rental bay or departure point |
| Outskirts with parking | Travellers collecting a car and leaving early | Public-transport frequency and after-hours check-in |
| Portree or elsewhere on Skye | More time on Skye and less same-day return driving | Peak-season prices, availability and onward transport |
What worked on our weekend
Our private Inverness Airbnb cost £35 in total for two people. We arrived after the evening coach from Glasgow, drank coffee at the accommodation, collected our Enterprise Car Club vehicle early and drove the full Trotternish route. This arrangement saved money, but the day was intense: we completed both the Old Man of Storr and Quiraing walks before returning the car and taking the night bus to Edinburgh.
Five checks before paying
- Measure the walking route from your actual coach, rail or rental collection point.
- Confirm the late check-in process in writing.
- Check whether parking is included if you will keep a car overnight.
- Read the cancellation deadline and final price, including taxes.
- Do not assume “Inverness” means the city centre—open the map before booking.

Is Inverness a practical base for a one-day Isle of Skye road trip?
It is possible, but it creates a very long driving and hiking day. It suited our fast weekend itinerary because our coach and car collection were in Inverness.
Should I stay near Inverness bus station?
It is the most convenient area for a late coach arrival, an early departure and walking to many central services. Always check the exact walking route before booking.
Is staying on Skye better?
A Skye stay gives you more time and less return driving. Inverness can be more practical when your transport connections and rental collection are there.
