St Andrews on a Budget: Our £12 Return Bus Day Trip from Edinburgh
Two people, one day, no hotel: we left Edinburgh at about 10 AM, explored St Andrews on foot and were back by around 8 PM. Our return bus fare was £12 per person.
St Andrews was exactly the kind of Scottish trip that works for our travel style: spend on the journey, walk as much as possible once you arrive and let the town itself provide most of the experience. We travelled by bus from Edinburgh, paid £12 each including the return, and did the whole trip without booking accommodation.

Our 10-hour St Andrews day
We took the bus from Edinburgh and treated St Andrews as a full day out rather than an overnight break.
Once in St Andrews, the day was built around walking: the Old Course area, the coast, the university and James Gregory’s Meridian Line.
We spent time around the waterfront and beach, which added a completely different feel without adding accommodation costs.
We returned the same evening, keeping the trip simple and avoiding a hotel bill.
Start around the Old Course and Swilcan Bridge
The Old Course area is one of the most recognisable parts of St Andrews, but you do not need an expensive golf itinerary to appreciate it. We enjoyed the open scenery and the famous stone bridge as part of our walk through town.
Walk towards the beach
The coast was one of the easiest ways to slow the day down without spending more. A beach walk gives you time away from the busier historic centre and helps make a budget day trip feel like a proper escape rather than a checklist of attractions.
Visit the University of St Andrews area
The university is central to the identity of the town. Historic stone buildings and courtyards make it worth including even on a short trip, especially because it fits naturally into a walking route rather than requiring a separate journey.
Find James Gregory’s Meridian Line
One of the details we wanted to include was James Gregory’s Meridian Line. It is the sort of small historical feature that suits budget travel perfectly: it gives you another story to look for while walking through St Andrews, rather than another ticket to buy.
Continue to the aquarium and waterfront area
We also spent time around the coastal area near St Andrews Aquarium. Even without building the day around a paid aquarium visit, the surrounding waterfront and sea views worked naturally with the rest of our walking route.
Why this worked as a budget trip
The main saving came from making St Andrews a day trip. For two people, we spent a confirmed £24 on return bus travel and avoided paying for another night away. Once there, walking connected the main parts of the day.
