Mumbai Solo Trip: 7 Nights for About ₹85,000 from San Francisco
In March 2012, I travelled alone from San Francisco to Mumbai on Air India. I stayed at a budget hotel in Powai, ate most meals at my cousin’s house and explored the city by suburban train, auto-rickshaw and taxi. My total spend was approximately ₹80,000–₹85,000, including the international flight.

Mumbai highlights

My six sightseeing days in Mumbai
I arrived in Mumbai, settled into my budget hotel in Powai and spent time with my cousins. Staying near family made meals simpler and kept the trip affordable.
I explored the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda heritage area and Colaba Causeway, then continued towards Marine Drive and Girgaon Chowpatty. I did not buy souvenirs.
I took the public ferry from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island and visited the rock-cut caves. This was the principal paid sightseeing excursion of the trip.
I travelled into Mumbai’s western suburbs, walked around Bandra and Linking Road, and spent time at Juhu Beach without turning the day into a shopping trip.
I visited Siddhivinayak Temple and Malabar Hill. Haji Ali Dargah was not part of this trip.
I kept time for family, repeat walks and the practical journey back across the city before departure. The Prince of Wales Museum, now CSMVS, was not visited.
How I kept the trip affordable
- Family meals: most eating happened at my cousin’s house, reducing restaurant expenditure to around ₹2,000.
- Public and local transport: I combined suburban trains with auto-rickshaws and taxis instead of depending entirely on private cars.
- Free city landmarks: Marine Drive, Juhu Beach, Gateway of India surroundings, Kala Ghoda and neighbourhood walks required little or no admission spending.
- No shopping budget: I visited Colaba Causeway and Linking Road but did not buy souvenirs.
